Hamptons Estate Agency has been surveying the cost of renting since 2014. They are now reporting that the cost of renting a home has risen by 12% since August. The most significant rise seen to date. £1304 is now the typical monthly rent of a new-let property. The pressure on landlords from increased mortgage rates and rising tenant demand pushes up rental costs. Furthermore, the colossal mismatch between supply and demand in many areas across the country is making renting more expensive.

Hotly debated in parliament at this time is the new legislation being passed which will stop landlords from evicting tenants without justification.  This new Bill is causing some landlords to sell and leave the sector. However, campaigners claim MPs are making slow progress on the new law. Competition for tenancies remains stiff as a smaller selection of rental properties is causing rising rents. On average, 20 renters are competing against each other for a single home.
